How to React to Messages on Instagram

Instagram added a new feature allowing users to react to DMs after collaborating with Facebook Messenger on 29th September 2020. It includes multiple emoji reactions, such as heart emojis, smiley faces, symbols, and more.

If you want to reply to an Instagram DM with an emoji, you’ve come to the right place. In this article, we are going to discuss in detail how to react to messages on Instagram. So, read out the complete article.

How to React to Messages on Instagram

It’s quite easy to react to Instagram Direct messages. Here are the steps to react to messages on Instagram. However, remember that these steps are only usable on the Instagram mobile app available on Android and iOS.

Step 1. Open Instagram.

Step 2. Tap on the messenger icon from the top right side to open the Instagram DM section.

Step 3. Tap on an Instagram conversation. 

Step 4. Double tap on a message to quickly react.

Step 5.  You’ll see the heart emoji under the message. It’s the default double-tap emoji. 

Alternatively, you can press and hold the message and select any emojis from the pop-up emoji bar.

Note: We’ve already mentioned that Instagram merged with Facebook Messenger. That’s why you’ll only get this emoji reaction feature if your Instagram account is connected to Facebook. If it’s not connected, just navigate to the Instagram app Settings> Account Center to link the Facebook account. 

How to Change the Default Emoji Reaction

If you want to change the default emoji reactions with your favorite emojis, you can do this by using the steps below.

  1. Open an Instagram message and hold it.
  2. Once the emoji box appears, tap and hold the emoji you want to replace.
  3. Now, select your preferable emoji to add it to the pop-up box.
  4. Tap Done.

Note: If you can’t see this list, it means this feature of Instagram isn’t available in your region. Unfortunately, there is no other way to access it. 

How to Customize Emojis on Instagram?

There are many emojis available on the keyboards of our mobile, but we only use a few specific emojis. The same thing happens while reacting to a direct message on Instagram. That’s why it’s important to customize emojis to avoid searching for them always. To do so,

1. Press and hold an Instagram message to react.

2. Tap the “+” icon located in the right corner of the pop-up emoji bar.

3. Tap on Customise besides Your reactions.

4. Now, select the emoji that you want to replace.

5. Tap the new emoji to add it to the pop-up bar instead of the old one. 

6. Tap on the checkmark

Keep in mind that, whenever you double tap on a DM, the emoji you’ve set at the first of the pop-up emoji bar will appear while double tapping on a message. 

How to React to Messages on Instagram via PC?

Probably, you want to send direct messages on Instagram via your PC or Mac. In that case, you won’t get any custom emoji reactions to react to a message as it’s only available for Instagram mobile app.

But you can click twice on a message to give a heart emoji reaction. Sadly, that is the only emoji available on the Instagram web. Also, you can click on the heart emoji to remove your reaction. 

Why the Emoji Reactions are not Showing on My Instagram App?

The emoji reactions are not showing on the Instagram app because the Instagram app is updated. In that case, update the latest version of the Instagram app. It’ll include all the new features on the app and improve security. 

In order to update Instagram, you need to go to the  Google Play Store or the App Store. If you find any available updates, simply tap on the Update button next to the app. 

Once the app is updated, open Instagram and navigate to Settings> Update Messaging to get the new features on your device.
